As early as the 1700's and 1800's, floorcloths
were produced by the artisans of the day as a substitute for expensive
carpeting. The early cloths were imported from England, where they
provided a durable, handsome way of covering a floor. Floorcloths were
painted freehand on great pieces of canvas, sewed together and stretched
taut. Later, stenciling was used to more efficiently produce repeated
and intricate designs, although hand painted versions continued to
exist.
The floorcloths on this site are from Ruby Slippers Studio. All cloth
designs are original hand painted creations of Callahan McDonough. |
